Yanks going after Halladay??

If you're the World Series champ, might as well try to get better, right? The New York Yankees have apparently told the Toronto Blue Jays that it is interested in trading for ace Roy Halladay, according to Sports Illustrated. Halladay only has one year left on his contract but the Blue Jays let it be known the other day that whatever team is interested in Halladay and makes the best offer will get a time window to try and get Halladay signed to an extension. And the Yankees are, of course, one of a small bunch of teams that can offer Halladay massive bucks over a long term. It is believed that the Blue Jays would like a package of players from the Yankees that would include Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain. Toronto's last GM, J.P. Ricciardi tried to get the Yanks to trade him both of these guys for Halladay and that went nowhere.

Is Iverson still the "Answer"??

Allen Iverson(notes) becomes a free agent this evening and after New York Knicks president told reporters the other day that it was a long shot for the aging guard to join the Knickerbockers, it is now apparently a 50-50 chance, according to the New York Times. Someone associated with the team apparently told the paper, "It's a given. They're going to make the biggest play for him." Who else would at this point? Iverson was a big distraction instead of a savior for his last two teams, the Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies, so not too many other teams are clamoring for his services, except apparently the Miami Heat. One of Iverson's pals told the New York Daily News that the team is "hot" after Iverson. The struggling Knicks have no other way of injecting any talent into their team chemistry so might as well give it a shot and see what happens. What can it hurt? They can always do what the Grizzlies did and put him on waivers.

Bradshaw calls it how he sees it!!

Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw fired away at Dallas Cowboys' wide receiver Roy Williams for his performance in Sunday's loss. ``Dallas lost that game when Roy Williams dropped that pass and then fumbled, too,'' said Bradshaw, a co host of FOX's NFL Sunday show. ``He may have finished with 100 yards receiving, but he's certainly not worth two first-round picks and all that money Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is paying him. He's not proving anything.''

Buffalo reaching out to Shanahan??

The Buffalo Bills intend to do a comprehensive search for a new head coach and will consider all options -- even mega-coaches such as Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher -- according to team and league sources. According to a report on ESPN, the Bills made contact with Shanahan and intend to set up a meeting with the former Denver coach. A coach outside the "A-list" who could fit the Bills' profile is Jim Haslett, the former Bills linebacker and former Saints head coach. With all the possible openings after the season would any of the "A-listers" consider Buffalo?

Jamarcus to the bench??

Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has thrown two touchdowns and nine interceptions so far this season but team owner Al Davis apparently loves the guy. Raiders coach Tom Cable reportedly is losing his faith in the quarterback and wants to go a different route. But coaches that cross Davis are putting their own jobs in jeopardy. And Cable doesn't seem to care. He must still just be feeling happy about the fact that the league isn't going to take any action against him for clocking one of his assistants this summer so hard that it reportedly broke the guy's jaw and the supposed whole back history of violence against an ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend. Still, Davis is calling Russell a "great" quarterback so Cable might not want to bench this guy just yet. Aren't you glad you're not a Raiders fan?

Is it too late??

The Charlie Weis era appears to be fading into the sunset in South Bend. The Irish's new athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, told reporters over the weekend that the six years remaining on Weis's gigantic contract would not influence his job status. There have been multiple and varied reports of just how much a buyout of Weis's contract would be. (The Sporting News reported $18 million on Sunday.) The top candidate to replace Weis would probably be Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly. Is Kelly the right choice? Is there anything Weis can do at this point?

What was he thinking??!!

This was as bad as anything the Red Sox ever did. Had it been a playoff game, it would be right up there with Bucky Dent, Bill Buckner, Aaron Boone, and History Derailed in Glendale, Ariz. And Bill Belichick played the part of Grady Little. And Belichick gets the blame. Too smart for his own good this time. The sin of hubris. In the postgame confusion, Belichick twice made a reference to the Patriots trying to gain 1 yard. "I thought we could get that yard," he said. Asked if he knew the team needed 2 yards, Belichick said that he did. But then he said, "I don't know how we could not get a yard on that."

Westbrook's Career Over??

Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook got his second concussion of the season yesterday and the word is that he is likely out for the rest of the season and could be done as a pro, according to NFL.com. Coach Any Reid called it a "heck of a hit." Reid wouldn't make any predictions on whether this was career-threatening to Westbrook "In these types of situations, football is secondary. We've got to look out for this kid and for his future and make sure everything's OK for him before he gets back out there," he said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The Eagles may look into signing free agents Edgerrin James, Larry Johnson, and Warrick Dunn.

Warriors deal Jackson to Bobcats

The Golden State Warriors have found a home for there pain in the neck guard Stephen Jackson, sending the guard to Charlotte in a four-player deal. The Bobcats announced Monday they acquired Jackson and guard Acie Law for guard Raja Bell and forward Vladimir Radmanovic. The deal breaks up a difficult relationship for Jackson and Warriors coach Don Nelson while giving a boost to the NBA's lowest-scoring team. I would say its a win for both teams. The Warriors move a player who was tearing the team apart, even players were growing tired of Jackson's attitude. The Bobcats need a scorer and on that team Jackson should have the opportunities to be a 20 point per game player. It's not very often that you see both teams benefit from a trade immediately, but I expect both teams to play much better in large part because of this trade

Stage set for mega fight!!

Well we really didn't learn too much Saturday night...Cotto is a warrior who has too much heart for his own good sometimes and Pacquiao is hands down the best pound for pound for fighter in the world. Now the stage is set for the fight that we all want and boxing needs more than ever...a dream match up of two of the best fighters of a generation. Mayweather VS Pacquiao!! Mayweather, coming off an electrifying performance against Jaun Manual Marquez can not pass on the potential of cementing his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of all time. Plus Sugar Shane loves cash and this fight should easily pass the $80 million purse that Oscar and Mayweather split in 2007. $100 million purse would definitely make it a lot easier for Mayweather to take on his toughest opponent to date. Make no mistake about it, Mayweather has never faced an opponent who can match him in speed and power. I would give the slight speed advantage to Mayweather and the slight power advantage to Pacquiao. Both are known for their ability to throw and land punches from unusual angles, from avoiding and making each punch count. it would be speed against speed, true boxer against true boxer, two all-time great, lined up and ready!!

Pacquiao VS Mayweather. See you in 2010!!

Changing of the guard?? Bengals vs Steelers

I sure didn't see this one coming!! This time of the year is Steeler time, right?? They have played .500 ball during Sept and Oct the past 4 seasons, but "turn it on" in Nov and Dec to the tune of 24-8 record over that same period. What's even a bigger shock is how the Bengals won...smothering defense!! They held the potent Steelers offense to 80 yards on the ground and forced Big Ben to a 50% completion day, 174 yards, 1 int and ZERO touchdowns. The Steelers have been known to win these type of grind it out games where they always are the team who gets the big play that changes the outcome of the game. not this time!! The Bengals outplayed the Steelers in every aspect of the game and got the big play in a 96 yard kickoff return by Benard Scott. So where do these two teams go from here?? The Bengals have what has to be the easiest 3 game stretch in the history of football...Raiders, Browns and Lions. I fully expect the Bengals to be sitting at 10-2 after there Dec 6 game against the Lions. The Steelers have the Chiefs, Ravens and Raiders over there next 3 games. That Sunday night game against the Ravens on Nov 29 is going to be a huge game as both teams are going to be battling for those tough to come by wild cards!! My prediction (I really hope) is that we get to see the Steelers and Bengals run it back in January when it really counts!!

Notre Dame falls short again

Is Charlie Weis going to be able survive another disappointing season? This team was suppose to compete for a BCS bowl. Now they are 6-4 with 2 games remaining against UCONN and Stanford and 6-6 is staring the Fighting Irish in the face. The game against UCONN on paper looks like a win for the Irish, but with there balanced offense which has averaged 30 points pre game this year it will be anything but a cake walk. To end the season the Irish will take on the out of no where powerhouse Stanford Cardinals. Stanford has beaten two top 10 teams (Oregon and USC) the past two weeks by a combined score 106-63. I believe that if the Irish do not win both of these games that Weis is a goner. Whats so ironic about all of this is that when Weis came in I thought he would struggle to recruit and excel at coaching...honestly it's been the exact opposite. He has been able to get top recruits to come to South Bend, but has made some very questionable coaching mistakes. He's seems to be trying to play it safe these days. Remember his first season as the head coach...going for it on 4th down all the time and having an arrogance about him that just made you root against him. Now he looks confused about what to do on 3rd downs let alone on 4th down and that arrogance is long gone. Now you almost feel sorry for him, well at least I do. So as Notre Dame enters the final stretch, possible the final two games of the Weis era, will they be able to somehow salvage the season with what would be an amazing 2-0 finish??
